Why grinding or shot-blast prep makes or breaks an epoxy floor
Every epoxy floor lives or dies on what happens before the coating goes down. Skip proper surface prep, or do it wrong, and the epoxy peels, bubbles, or flakes off within a year or two no matter how good the product is. The two main ways to prep concrete for epoxy flooring are diamond grinding and shot-blasting. A few properties can get by with acid etching, but for anything beyond a light-duty DIY job, it’s really a choice between the two.
Here’s how each one works, where it wins, and how to think through which one fits a given slab.
Diamond Grinding
Diamond grinding uses a machine fitted with diamond-segmented discs that grind down the top layer of concrete. It levels high spots, knocks off old coatings or thinset residue, and opens up the pores of the concrete so epoxy has something to grip.
Grinding tends to be the go-to for smaller or tighter spaces — garages, basements, small retail floors — where a shot-blaster’s size or dust output isn’t practical. It’s also the better call when a slab has old paint, glue, or a thin coating that needs to come off along with the surface profile work. Grinding can be dialed in more precisely, which matters on floors with existing damage or uneven patches that need feathering.
The trade-off is speed and profile depth. Grinding is a slower process per square foot, and on very hard or dense concrete it can polish the surface instead of profiling it, which actually works against epoxy adhesion if the wrong disc is used.
Shot-Blasting
Shot-blasting fires small steel shot at the concrete surface at high speed, then vacuums the shot and debris back up in the same pass. It’s a dry, largely dustless process, and it’s fast — it can cover a large floor in a fraction of the time grinding takes.
Shot-blasting shines on bigger floors: garages with extra bays, shop floors, warehouse space, commercial units. It leaves a consistent, slightly rougher profile across the whole slab, which is exactly what epoxy wants for a strong mechanical bond. Because the equipment reclaims the shot and dust as it goes, it’s also a cleaner option for prep work done inside occupied buildings.
The catch is that shot-blasting doesn’t level a floor the way grinding does. If there are humps, ridges, or old adhesive ridges that need to be ground down flat, shot-blasting alone won’t fix that. It also isn’t well suited to tight corners, edges, or small enclosed rooms where the machine can’t maneuver.
